BFEs for Approximate Zone A: Simplified Methods

Architect Training Course

This 1-hour course will provide the user with sources and simplified methods for determining base (100-year) flood elevations (BFEs) for Zone A (also referred to as 'approximate Zone A' or 'unnumbered Zone A') on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood maps.

BFEs determined using the sources and methods in this course can often be used instead of more expensive detailed engineering analyses. Good engineering or hydrolgic judgement is necessary to decide the adequacy of the methods presented in this course. This course can
assist community officials, surveyors, engineers, and others with information regarding:

  • FEMA/NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) requirements for determining BFEs in approximate zone areas
  • The application of local flood hazard prevention ordinances
  • Sources of BFE data
  • Simplified methods for determining BFEs
  • Examples of applications of data and methods

There will be a quiz at the end of this course.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will know:

  • The minimum requirements of the NFIP for determining BFEs in approximate Zone A areas
  • The sources of BFE data for FEMA flood maps
  • How to determine BFEs using simplified methods
  • How simplified methods may be used in local floodplain management, elevation certificates, map amendments or revisions, flood insurance application, and other purposes
